Sub-Bottom Profiling using an AUV | Ocean Bytes

Great post today by Doug about the new SBP unit.  Still early days with this thing and lots of hardware and more software wrinkles to iron out but shows great promise especially as it runs nicely along with the geoswath and side-scan....can we take any more simultaneous measurements here people!?!

AUV configured with both sub-bottom profiler and swath bathymetry

This is about the longest configuration of the AUV we have ever conducted as it includes both the GeoSwath phase-measuring bathymetric sonar and the new Benthos Chirp III SBP.

Japan Reluctant To Disclose Drone Footage of Fukushima Plant

garymortimer writes with word that "footage taken from an RQ-4 Global Hawk drone was passed on to the Japanese government with permission for public release from the US Air Force. US military sources said that the decision to release the footage — or not — was up to the Japanese government." The Japanese government, though, has thus far chosen not to release the high-resolution footage of the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant.

Where Have All the Robots Gone?

Where Have All the Robots Gone?

Right after the Japanese earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, I began jokingly mentioning to friends: "At least Japan has lots of robots that can help." Then, as the days have worn on, and the tragedies mount, I started seeing comments on Facebook and blogs, asking: "Where are the robots!?"

Where are the robots? Japan is known for its cutting-edge robotics development and deployment — it's even known for its development of emergency robots. In all of the coverage, I haven't seen any discussion whatsoever about bringing in bots. After the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents, Red Whittaker, of Carnegie Mellon, and later RedZone Robotics, developed robots specifically for nuclear emergency applications. If such robots exist (and can handle some of the tasks being currently undertaken by humans), then why are they needlessly cooking plant workers and JSDF (self-defense forces) if they don't need to be?

Discuss.

A valuable reference for our upcoming NEEMO project.  I contacted the folks who wrote the report to ask for digital copies of the maps and was shocked to learn that they aren't available.  Well at least not readily.  There is some effort to try and reconstruct them from files left behind from the technical staff member who held the files.  Came as quite a surprise to me that a federal agency would not have had these archived.

Search for buried treasure with your very own OpenROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle)

Search for buried treasure with your very own OpenROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle)

Eric Stackpole is an adventurer. For Eric, exploring the inner depths of Hall City Cave was only the beginning of his latest exploration. He had one goal in mind: buried treasure.

Legend has it that, in the late 1800s, a few renegade Native Americans attacked a surprisingly well-to-do group of miners near Hayfork, CA. The attackers took about 100lbs of gold nuggets from the miners.

Since the Indians were on foot, and also carrying a very heavy load, it did not take long for the posse to catch up with them. In fact, as a last ditch effort to get away, the Indians stashed the gold somewhere so they could move faster. When the posse caught up with them, only the Indians knew where the gold was. The men in the posse told the Indians that they would not be hung for their crimes if they would tell where they hid the gold. The Indians told the posse that they had hidden the gold in Hall City Cave. Then they were promptly hung right on the spot.

As it turns out, Hall City Cave has a deep, submerged cavern at the back of the cave. The cavern is said to be bottomless, because no one apparently has ever been able to get to the bottom. And of course, not the posse, or anyone else, ever found the gold. Did the Indians hide the gold somewhere in the cave? Did they just dump it into the bottomless cavern to get rid of it? Did they have some secret hiding place in the cave, perhaps underwater? Or did they hide the gold somewhere else?

Excerpt from Dave McCracken's blog

These are questions that can't be answered by humans alone. Something capable of underwater exploration and data collection was necessary. Enter: OpenROV.

OpenROV is a project started by Eric Stackpole and David Lang, with the mission of making underwater exploration available to the masses. The first design of OpenROV ("ROV1″) is a shoebox-sized Arduino-controlled submarine device, with an onboard HD webcam, designed to operate in an unexplored underwater cave. The plans for OpenROV are open source. In other words, OpenROV is hackable, and Eric and David hope customization and improvement of the designs are exactly what takes place. Their aim for OpenROV is the crowdsourcing of exploration–that, by opening up the plans for OpenROV, the possibility for discovery will be heightened. There exists a depth of knowledge to be learned about the deep. OpenROV may allow some of these secrets to finally be uncovered.

OpenROV was built at TechShop in Menlo Park, home to many a Maker in the Bay Area. Eric was careful to built in a garage-like setting, so OpenROV could be recreated by others, anywhere. However, he's made a few mods using equipment like TechShop's laser cutter that makes OpenROV a cut above "garage" quality.

The second design of OpenROV is in the testing phase. Once Eric can show that the prototype works, he will release plans on openrov.com. Certainly, he and David will be back to Hall City Cave to search for the stuff of legend.

Keep up with David and Eric's adventures on openrov.com and be sure to catch them at this years Maker Faire Bay Area! See photos of Hall City Cave exploration, or "Reconnaissance Expedition", here and here. Eric explored the cave with friends, Jeff Bernard (also shown in the photo above, and who initially introduced the story to Eric) and Bran Sorem (who took the photo and also help with development of the ROV).

To see some of Eric's DIY background, check out this video of the hybrid rocket motor he built using only parts from a local hardware store. In his words, "I love figuring out how to do high-tech things with low-tech/ consumer-off-the-shelf parts."

Endeavor's New Look

Endeavor's New Look

From Dean Farmer:

Weather permitting, R/V Endeavor will return to the GSO pier next Tuesday after an extensive shipyard repair period at SENESCO Marine in Quonset. She was in drydock for over 2 months and still has some alongside work to be done prior to her sailing on her first cruise of the year on March 22. One of the most obvious changes you will recognize is her freeboard hull color is now BLUE. After close to 35 years at sea, with the same aging equipment on the upper decks, maintenance of a white hull was becoming impractical. So at the recommendation of marine coating experts we changed her hull to a darker color to enhance the longevity of her service life. I am confident you will agree she now "cuts a fine figure" with her new paint scheme.

Second Blog (Week of March 7)

The first week of my involvement in the NEEMO Aquarius project was dominated by hands on interpretation of SonarWiz data.  However, as time progressed my participation in the project leaned more towards a research method.  Attempting to find scholarly articles focusing on the Conch Reef was at first relatively an easy task due to the direction I was instructed to go about by Art.  I began to research using the University of Delaware's online databases (such as Web of Science, GeoRef, etc.), searching for main topics involving "conch reef", "key largo", "Leichter" and "Stokes".  This method helped a great deal with journals about the changes that have occurred involved the physical aspects of the coral reef.  I found it a bit more difficult to find resources regarding the geological features of the area.
Currently I have uploaded twenty references to the CSHEL RefWorks under the 'Aquarius' file.  I will continue to search for more references in order to gain a better understanding of the entire area.

First Blog (Week of Feb. 28)

Before I started doing physical research and data analysis for the Aquarius project in Key Largo, I attended a video conference meeting in order to catch up on all the specs of the procedures and goals for the project.

The first week of my participation in the NEEMO project mainly involved the interpretation and classification of side scan sonar on the program SonarWiz.  I personally reviewed all of the bathymetry data that was collected by our University of Delaware's Tow-fish.  Specifically, I looked for images or differences that seemed to stick out among the "normal" sea floor.  My results lead to the discovery of many coral formations, spur and groove patterns, ripples, sand waves, large fish groups, valleys/ridges, what looked like a sunken ship mast, many cages, an old railway car, among some other minor discoveries.

When I came across an image I thought was of significance I labeled it as a target and continued through the rest of the SonarWiz data.  At first I had some difficulties being able to recognize what I was looking at, but with the help of Art, Hilary and Nicole I became better at understanding the software and describing the imagery.
