Eureka it works. Switching out the two drives was quicker and less painful than I imagined (I'm getting good at this surgery). I then used carbon copy cloner to clone the old hd to the ssd and switched boot drives and voila it worked. Have now scrubbed the old drive and now I have a 460gb SSD for primary and the 750gb as a storage drive. Continuing to install software and will commence transfering my files from my old laptop!
Next to put the optical drive into the external enclosure kit I purchased (will need that for the bootcamp windows installation).
